Photojournalist cam, Catwalk in the Street. A news feature assignment for the Herald On Sunday in Newmarket, Auckland.

The news camera is a Nikon D3s shot with a Nikon 70-200 AFS VR II 2.8 lens.
A Contour GPS is attached to the D3s giving a close up perspective of a news situation. The Contour Cam was supplied by LEGEAR.

As with quite a few news events you spend a bit of time moving around looking for a good spot which could offer a more exclusive angle. The high shot at the start illustrated the news story probably the best, a catwalk in the middle of the street. I thought it would be best to get that shot straight away and then move in closer.

I just carried the camera and lens for this shoot. Nothing else. The lighting was consistent so the D3s just required one exposure set manually. 400 at F4. ISO 400. This was pre checked before the action started.

The lens was set to VR on normal. The D3s was on burst rate set to 2-3 frames per second. ( it can do 10 or something horrendous but you cant see whats happening due to the mirror flapping up and down)

It looked like there were quite a few students covering this catwalk.( at both ends of the catwalk) It would have been a really good exercise with multiple things to think about like movement, lighting, distance and compositions, all happening quite quickly.

The Ports of Auckland protest on the 10th of March was a peaceful affair attracting a strong crowd of 4-5000 people. The Haka performed by port workers was not planned. I saw them forming up and anticipated a shot.
I always try and keep the camera working even if something obvious has finished. I think the last frame at the end was my personal favorite.

I used a Nikon D3s with 3 lenses for this shoot. A 70-200 AFS VR II 2.8, 17-35 AFS 2.8, and the trusty 50mm 1.4. I carried an old school khaki Domke F-2 camera bag with other bits in it. The light was strongly backlit, I used one manual exposure for the whole protest. I didn’t use any flash. The news pictures were edited using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop.

The Contour GPS was bolted to a flash bracket which in turn was bolted to the underneath of the D3s. The contour was rolling at 59.94 FPS at 720p. The clip was edited using Final Cut Pro X.

12,500 hits in two weeks , the hit rate is climbing at 1000 per day. Excellent result.

Equipment: NIkon D3s with Nikon lenses, 17-35, 70-200 VR II, Sennheiser microphones. Backup cameras-  JVC HD ,  Flip HD. All clips edited on a 15′ Macbook Pro running Final Cut X, Motion 5, and compressor.
